Defining and Understanding Qualitative Research

Learning Objectives

This is the introductory module for this course.  In this module, we are going to accomplish four learning outcomes.  When you have completed this module, you should be able to:

  1. Distinguish the difference between qualitative and quantitative research; (Session Long Project)

  2. Compare and discriminate between the differences of various qualitative research models;

  3. Understand the characteristics of qualitative research; and, (Case Assignment and Session Long Project)

  4. Understand the value of qualitative research to study particular research interests. (Case Assignment and Threaded Discussion)

Required Tasks as Session Begins

We need to plan for the scheduling of our synchronous (HorizonLive) conferences.  The conferences are usually held once for each module.   Conference participation is included among the grading components.  I know students are located throughout the United States and some are international. The conference is more appropriately scheduled during the second week of each module.  Your input as to the day and the time is important.  Send me an e-mail today.  Tell me what time zone you are in.  For example, Eastern Standard Time, or say "When it is 12 noon in Los Angeles, it is 9:00 pm in Dublin.  Include something like "Wednesday afternoons, Thursday mornings, or any evening after 3:00 p.m. Los Angeles time." I will take all the information into consideration and, hopefully, provide a reasonable accommodation for everyone.

Also it would be appreciated if you post a self-introduction to the Forum "Who's in this Course" in the Threaded Discussion.

Please continue this module by reviewing and studying the materials presented in the Module Background page .
