Module 04 - Home Page

Quasi-Experimental Research

Three-Way ANOVA with Covariates

Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA)

Key Terms or Concepts to Understand

  • The influence of Covariates

  • Homogeneity tests

  • Contrasts

Module Objectives:

At the end of this module the student should be able to:

1.  Compare and discriminate between various quasi-experimental research methods.

2.  Assess the strengths and weaknesses of each  quasi-experimental research method to control internal validity threats.

3. Assess and prepare appropriate descriptive statistics for research projects.

4. Know how to test a hypothesis with the use SPSS utilizing MANOVA.

5. Understand how the influence of a covariate is measured in an MANCOVA.

Essentially, a Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) and a MANOVA with a covariance (MANCOVA) is similar with ANOVA and ANCOVA; however, it is more complicated and one can compute multivariate linear regressions when using it. Think of a MANOVA as multiple ANOVAs.  Additionally, it has one additional difference which is quite significant.  It uses two or more dependent variables concurrently.  Keep in mind that MANOVA was designed  to replace ANOVA.  It will make more sense to you as you work your way through the CA for this module.
